REDWOOD. A NEW TWIST.
A curved redwood surface enhances linear design.
"It's a challenge to frame a curve in wood," notes architect Martin B. Gelber of Santa Monica.
Gelber's design capabilities were put to the test with this seaside residence in Ventura, California that had to be designed on a narrow site 90 feet deep by only 45 feet wide. His creative design features a stepped, 3,700 square foot beach home with flowing curves of Clear all Heart redwood in a 1x4 tongue-and-groove pattern.
"I selected redwood," Gelber says, "as a durable, organic material whose rich patina would complement the natural ocean environment and whose workability could best realize our fluid design. Redwood can be shaped and molded easier than most woods because it's soft. You can also make lots of angular cuts and corners. It's also naturally termite and rot resistant and takes tremendous abuse from the elements."
